The Tang Soo Tao belt system comprises White, Purple, Advanced Purple, Green, Advanced Green, Blue, Advanced Blue, Red, Advanced Red, Pre Dan Red and Black Belt.
White is significant in almost any culture or time, as a sign of purity. It is an absolute colour. The beginning student knows nothing in relation to martial arts. In this respect they are pure, untainted and open to receive proper instruction.
Purple: According to ancient mythology, purple was the colour of the underworld. At one time creatures were believed to live at the center of the earth. There were many kinds of spirits who ruled all life beneath the earth.
Green is a sign of life. As we rise from the center of the earth to the surface, we find growth. We emerge from darkness into life. It is a sign of happiness, youth and growth.
Blue is the colour of the sky. As our mind and consciousness develop, our thoughts are lifted upwards towards heaven.
Red is the colour of the sun. It is beyond the sky. The sun is the life force in our solar system. Without the sun we would die. Red is the colour of the fire element which lies in the heart. The red belt is the beginning of an advanced level of training that requires a strong heart and a firm will.
Black is the opposite of white. It is the complimentary factor to the beginning stage. At night all becomes black. Just as the coming of the night signifies the end of the day, so does this belt level signify the end of the students basic stages of development. Black is the colour in the universe which signifies endless time and space. It is the beginning of the end.
